Ewyas Harold Castle In 2006 Archaeological Investigations Ltd and the Ewyas Harold Archaeology and History Group undertook a major new survey of the castle at Ewyas Harold. This is believed to be one of the three earliest castles in the country built before the Norman Conquest by Osbern Pentecost. It was later rebuilt by William fitz Osbern. It would appear there has been very little documented excavation on the site and the book is the first chance to see some of the secrets of the castle revealed. It also provides a history of the lordship and trys to solve the puzzle of the whereabouts of the long lost Priory. The author (Andy Boucher) has been involved in archaeology since 1977 and for the past 10 years has been the Managing Director of Archaeological investigations Ltd. Other studies include work on Kenilworth Castle Mere, and in the City of Hereford itself. The book is 40 pages in A5 format. It includes both black and white and colour illustrations and photographs and is printed on high quality silk paper with a gloss card cover. Its retail price is 3.00 GBP + 0.60 GBP postage in the UK (= a total of £3.60).
Hereford City Excavations Volume 4 Further sites and Evolving Interpretations A large number of excavations took place between 1976 and 1990 and this book has collected the results from these together and presents them in an attractive manner that should appeal to interested amateurs and professionals alike.
How have archaeologists arrived at the interpretations of the city's archaeology? The first chapter looks at this and presents the different and changing interpretations since the 18th century and explains how they came about.
This is followed by a wealth of description of the sites investigated and what was buried beneath the city. 11th-century timber trackways, mills, medieval industrial waste, an 18th-19th century tannery and work on various monasteries.
The book then considers the objects recovered from these sites. Medieval trade in pottery, cloth, post-Medieval clay pipes and bottles; dress ornaments; animal bones etc....
It concludes with a consideration of the architecture of the city's gates (using historic illustrations as a source) and a review of the information recovered and how this has helped to understand the shaping of a medieval city.
